The United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (USPG).
USPG is an Anglican mission agency that works alongside Anglican churches and communities around the world, providing the resources - people, money and ideas - that they define as necessary to meet their local needs. USPG is Living the Gospel to enable people to grow spiritually, to thrive physically and to have a voice in an unjust world. It does this through

  • funding hospitals, HIV/AIDS awareness programmes and training for medical personnel.
  • education, through funding new schools and sending teachers wherever they are needed.
  • church ministry through funding theological training and pastoral programmes.
  • cross-cultural training, because we believe that each part of the church can learn from every other part.
  • inter-faith relations, including work in many of the world's trouble spots.

Parishes are encouraged to participate in mission through fundraising and prayer and by setting up links with projects around the world.

The Methodist Church Fund
The Methodist Church Fund is a central fund of the Methodist Church. The money is distributed to projects world-wide wherever it is needed. An important priority is to support community development and action for justice, especially among the most deprived and poor. Another is to develop confidence in evangelism and in the capacity to speak of God and faith in ways that make sense to all involved. Whenever and wherever the Church participates in such priorities, it is engaging in the mission of God.

Emmanuel Hospital Association, India
Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA) was founded in 1970 as an indigenous Christian health and development agency serving the people of North India. Its primary focus is the poor, largely in rural areas. With a catchment population of nearly seven million, EHA treats more than 500,000 patients each year in some of India's most needy areas. EHA is committed to the transformation of communities with programs that invest in the health and well being of everyone, irrespective of caste, creed or race.

Fairtrade
Heslington Church runs a Fairtrade stall every Sunday morning. The FAIRTRADE Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on products as a guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal. They receive a minimum price that covers the cost of sustainable production and an extra premium that is invested in social or economic development projects.

Christian Aid
Heslington Church is heavily committed to supporting the work of Christian Aid, partly because the Vicar's husband, John, is Chair of the York Committee, so there are regular reminders and lots of encouragement to get involved! There are five general areas of activity:

  1. The yearly House to House envelope collection in May covers the whole of the parish and for the last two years £2,000 has been collected on each occasion.
  2. Members of the congregation help manage stalls at the annual Christian Aid Shop held in the Guildhall in summer. This year the Shop was opened by the Lord Mayor and made a profit of £8,000.
  3. Special Emergency Appeals, as well as the Christmas envelope offerings, are supported by the Church as well as by individuals.
  4. The congregation are very supportive of John's walking guide books that he produces for Christian Aid. This year's 'Wilberforce Way' has so far raised over £4,000 and the money has been earmarked for work aimed at eliminating child labour in India.
  5. The York Christian Aid Committee has a Campaigns and Action Group but at present Heslington Church's only real involvement with his aspect of development work is the weekly Fair Trade stall held in the Church. This leaves plenty of scope for further activity for anyone who feels motivated by public campaigning.
