Rory's sabbatical
Rory will be taking the second half of sabbatical from Friday 30th July
and will not be available until Monday 13th September. He will spend
some of this time on Iona. Please remember him in your prayers.
Christian Aid
John is organising a special Bank Holiday Sponsored Walk on Monday 30th
August. It will be family oriented with the choice of either a 5-mile
or an extended 10-mile route. Please join us if you can or, alternatively,
sponsor the young people. The money will be donated to Christian Aid's
Zimbabwe Farming Project which is match-funded by the E.C. to the tune
of 9 to 1. This means that for every pound we raise, the E.C. adds
£9. This is an opportunity not to be missed!
Baptism Visitor and Stewardship Secretary
The church has a new Baptism
Visitor Coordinator in Alison Dorins and Liz Lomax is now the church's
cashier - we are all very grateful that Alison and Liz have taken
on these important jobs.
In memoriam
On the evening of Sunday 14th February, Gordon Thompson died very peacefully
in York District Hospital. Gordon has been editor of Heslington Outlook
for more than ten years. He is internationally famous in the world of
Karate, being one of the first people in the UK to learn Karate from
the Japanese and founding the first British Karate Club.
Kneeler in the Chapel
Doreen Wherrett is valiantly stitching an altar rail kneeler for us.
We need about 100 hanks of wool at approximately £2 each as well
as canvas and hessian backing. If you would like to contribute towards
any of these items there will be a box in church or hand your contribution
to a steward, church warden or Christine. Praise be for Doreen.
Organ
appeal
The good news is that we have raised all the money we need to pay for
the renovation of the organ. The gift aid money was an important contribution.
This enables the organ to continue playing well into the future - well
done all those who supported this effort. The organ repair itself
is
now complete and people have commented on how well the organ sounds.
Events which publicised the fund are:
The Praise and Pancakes evening on Shrove Tuesday was a good
do. The congregation's top ten hymns were sung with gusto by a good
crowd of people and they were introduced by entertaining and informative
anecdotes by our organist. This was then followed by traditional fare
and a good natter. Contributions to the Organ Fund totalled £123
and were gratefully received.
Sale of cards The money from Sue Garnett's card stall went
towards the organ fund this year. Thank you, Sue, for helping us in
this way.
Organ Recital Dr. Francis Jackson, Organist Emeritus at York
Minster, gave us a brilliant recital on our own organ at Heslington
on Friday 1st May in front of a good audience. It raised £466.
Afternoon tea at 17 Foxthorn Paddock raised £140 - lovely
afternoon of friendship enjoyed by all. Thanks to all who supported
this. Sue Garnett
Sponsored swim Malcolm Huntington has swum 75 lengths - 1875m
or 9 furlongs - at the David Lloyd sports club on his 75th birthday,
18 May 2009. He raised £1361 by doing this - thank you Malcolm
for this superlative effort.
Sydney Smith The Sydney Smith evening, organised for us by Dorothy
and Ivan Williams, was a great success, raising £835 for the organ
fund. In addition, the Sydney Smith Association donated £500.
This is a wonderful effort from these well-wishers to our church. Thanks
too to all who helped with the organisation and came on the night.
Church library
Our well-stocked library is available to all who use the church. We
are fortunate to have such a range of books that will appeal to new
readers of Christian books and scholars too. Come and take a look -
there is something for everyone. Registration is very simple - we only
require your name and address in the blue register. The borrowing procedure
is easy and explained.
New titles are frequently added to the library and books recently acquired
are on the bookcase facing you as you enter. A small collection of videos
is on your left.__________Peter
