Church Summer Fair
An invitation is extended to anyone interested in helping with planning
for the proposed Church Summer Fair. If you would like to attend a planning
meeting, or are interested in helping on the day, please talk to one
of the church wardens or stewards.
News of Fundraising Successes
My grateful thanks go to everyone involved in the various events designed
to raise much needed funds for our church. Over the autumn, many people
have organised, supported and sponsored these. In recent days, a valiant
few sang carols at the Designer Outlet; many more attended the Riding
Lights performance and Victorian Christmas Fair.
It isn't just about raising money in order to keep us afloat. Every
event generates a great whole community atmosphere where individuals
join together in a common purpose. Yes, the profits are needed, but
so too is the development and extension of our whole church family.
So, thank you, sincerely, to you all. I will be able to send you a precise
detail of funds raised over the autumn in the early New Year.
It was great to see takings amount to more than £900 at the Fair,
leading me to have a great deal of optimism for our shared future. The
photos are shown below - click on each one to see the enlargements.
On behalf of Melanie, Bob, Bob, Rick and myself, I wish you a peaceful
New Year.
Sincerely,______Karl
Kneeler in the Chapel
Doreen Wherrett is valiantly stitching an altar rail kneeler for us.
We need about 100 hanks of wool at approximately £2 each as well
as canvas and hessian backing. If you would like to contribute towards
any of these items there will be a box in church or hand your contribution
to a steward, church warden or Christine. Praise be for Doreen.
Organ
appeal
The good news is that we have raised all the money we need to pay for
the renovation of the organ. The gift aid money was an important contribution.
This enables the organ to continue playing well into the future - well
done all those who supported this effort. The organ repair itself is
almost complete and people have commented on how well the organ sounds.
Events which publicised the fund are:
The Praise and Pancakes evening on Shrove Tuesday was a good
do. The congregation's top ten hymns were sung with gusto by a good
crowd of people and they were introduced by entertaining and informative
anecdotes by our organist. This was then followed by traditional fare
and a good natter. Contributions to the Organ Fund totalled £123
and were gratefully received.
Sale of cards The money from Sue Garnett's card stall will go
towards the organ fund this year. Thank you, Sue, for helping us in
this way.
Organ Recital Dr. Francis Jackson, Organist Emeritus at York
Minster, gave us a brilliant recital on our own organ at Heslington
on Friday 1st May in front of a good audience. It raised £466.
Afternoon tea at 17 Foxthorn Paddock raised £140 - lovely
afternoon of friendship enjoyed by all. Thanks to all who supported
this. Sue Garnett
Sponsored swim Malcolm Huntington has swum 75 lengths - 1875m
or 9 furlongs - at the David Lloyd sports club on his 75th birthday,
18 May 2009. He raised £1361 by doing this - thank you Malcolm
for this superlative effort.
Sydney Smith The Sydney Smith evening, organised for us by Dorothy
and Ivan Williams, was a great success, raising £835 for the organ
fund. In addition, the Sydney Smith Association donated £500.
This is a wonderful effort from these well-wishers to our church. Thanks
too to all who helped with the organisation and came on the night.
Church library
Our well-stocked library is available to all who use the church. We
are fortunate to have such a range of books that will appeal to new
readers of Christian books and scholars too. Come and take a look -
there is something for everyone. Registration is very simple - we only
require your name and address in the blue register. The borrowing procedure
is easy and explained.
New titles are frequently added to the library and books recently acquired
are on the bookcase facing you as you enter. A small collection of videos
is on your left.__________Peter
