Heslington Church, affectionately known as "Hes",
is the nearest church to campus and ministry to the students and families
in the area is the main focus.
The student representative on the Church Council is Tom Swinson
(right), who is a good person to contact. He will tell you how to
get involved in Heslington Church and also about the various Christian
societies on campus. Let him know about any ideas that you think
will benefit the church, its mission and its outreach to students.
Students are most welcome to be involved in the various areas of
church life, such as assisting in worship, being involved with children's
work, attending or helping at social occasions, being involved in
the church's work in the community.

Rory is the Methodist Chaplain to the University and
is based at Heslington Church. He should be around most Sundays, but he
can also be contacted via the Church Office as well as via the chaplaincy
office at the university. He is very approachable for both silly and serious
matters. The chaplaincy
website will tell you more about his activities and will also allow
you to sign up to the chaplaincy email for weekly information about events.
The chaplaincy normally organises two major events each year. One is
an ecumenical retreat during the Spring Term with the monastic community
at Mirfield, giving a weekend of silence and reflection. More details
are on the notices page. The second event this academic year takes place
during the Easter Vacation at L'Arche, Trosly-Breuil, north of Paris.
L'Arche forms communities where people with various handicaps live with
able-bodied folk, learning from each other and recognising their various
gifts.
There is a worship band which plays regularly
and welcomes new members (singing or instrumental), just speak
to them after the service.
On the first Sunday of the University year Heslington Church
hosts a (free) lunch for students after the 11.00 am service with
soup and lots of apple pie.
On one Sunday each term the 11.00 am service is led mainly by
students. Those who are interested in planning and helping with
an All Age Service please speak to Rory or drop him a line on
email.
In the summer term, there is the Chaplaincy Barbecue every other
Sunday starting on the Sunday at the end of freshers week. The
food is plentiful and free and anyone who wants to come is fed
well.
